I believe that we all have heard of this great quote by Taylor Caldwell that “Learning should be a joy and full of excitement. It is life’s greatest adventure; it is an illustrated excursion into the minds of
noble and the learned”. This is exactly what happen on 2nd May, 2016 when I went to an adventurous excursion/picnic to NIFOR with the members of Isiuwa Study Center (ISC).
In one of my previous post, which I titled
Tips On How To Choose The Right Career , I said something about the excursion that I will be going to NIFOR that faithful day. So today, I want to share with you all how the event took place. Enjoy!!
Monday, 2nd of May was a day to remember in the years to come because that was my first time of going for an excursion as a Uniben student and also my first time of visiting NIFOR. I have being hearing of that great institution but I have not seen any opportunity for me to at least set my eyes on their main gate talk more of entering it. But luckily, the opportunity later showed itself when it was announced on 29th April that we will be going for excursion at NIFOR on the 2nd May. I was very excited and am sure that I was the happiest person among the members of ISC that went for the excursion. I couldn’t wait for the day to come but I had to exercise patient until the day later arrived. It was worker’s day!! A public holiday!! And thank God no lecturer fixed extra class for us that day. So I must go to NIFOR.
On that faithful day, in other for me not to miss out because the excursion was slated to take off by 10am, I woke up around 4:30am to start getting things ready. I know you may be surprised that I said 4:30am but the truth was that I don’t want to hear any story that touch. So I did my normal morning routine, updated my blog and before you knew it, it was already 10am. I set off immediately to ISC. But it was unfortunately that we later left around 11:45am due to some preparations like getting foods and drinks.
Within an hour of kicking of the journey, I saw our bus stopping for security check up at the NIFOR main gate but in other for me to be sure of where I was, I had to search for the signpost and any other relevant things concerning the institution. After the security check up, we headed straight to where our bus will park. On our way, I saw different kind of palm tree species. I even saw something that looks like nylon on the palm tree that they used to extract palm wine.
Among all, the most exciting part of the excursion was the visiting of the NIFOR River because when I visited a river last was about 11yrs ago. So, I believe that you can now see the reason while I was the happiest person among the members of ISC students that went for the excursion. On reaching the river after a long trekking that was almost the same thing as trekking from Uniben main gate to New Benin market, I didn’t feel any kind of weakness because I was quest to see the river and also swim. On seeing the river, my heart was at its utmost degree of joy. So Chibuike, Barry and I went to swim while others choose to play football first. Barry was our camera man since he don’t wish to swim at that moment. Later, the rest join us after they had finished playing ball.
At about 2:45pm, we went to eat and drink under one coconut tree that the kind of breeze there can make one sleep off without knowing. Though I was eating, I still feel like living that food and went back to my swimming because I felt it was more important at that moment. Thank God that after eating, we still went back to the swimming. It was during this second time that I had the real fun. I, Charles, Henry, Barry and some others tried all our possible best to know if we can catch a small fish with many strategies which among was using unripe mango, but all our effort proved abortive. So our enjoyment continues. We did other things like swimming competition which was led by bro. Desmond. At last, I got exhausted though I still forced myself to continue the fun.
At about 4:46pm, when everybody got tired, we snapped pictures and then decided to trek back to where our bus parked. It was during this time that I realize how far the road that I trekked before was. I was able to manage myself to the bus but though I still feel like not going back to school that day. Finally, at about 5:05pm we set off the journey back to school.
Now, the summary of this my adventurous excursion story is that; Learning never end. And as also said by Taylor that “Learning should be a joy and full of excitement". You can learn from everything around you especially when you make out time to visit a new place instead of isolating yourself in one environment. I have learnt a lot in this excursion because I seized that opportunity to see the aquatic macrophyte, fungi and algae which I was thought of in my first semester. I also used the opportunity to see different species of palm trees. My greatest benefit was also breaking the record of not swimming for the past 11yrs.
So as you can see, the excursion was of beneficial for me in particular. Therefore, I can’t wait for another excursion to come up.
